Traveling to the Danakil Depression is not a simple road trip. Because of the extreme heat, rugged terrain, and regional security protocols, access is strictly regulated. You must fly into a nearby regional hub and join an authorized tour operator. Military escorts and armed scouts are mandatory, meaning all transport happens in organized, multi-vehicle convoys.
Where do tours to the Danakil Depression start?
Most Danakil Depression tours start from the cities of Mekelle or Semera.
Mekelle, the capital of the Tigray Region, is the most common starting point. Semera, in the Afar Region, is an alternative hub. From Mekelle, the drive into the depression takes roughly 3 to 4 hours by 4WD vehicle. Both cities have regional airports.
Can you visit the Danakil Depression without a guide?
No, independent travel to the Danakil Depression is not permitted.
You cannot drive yourself or hire a private vehicle to go alone. Visitors must travel with an authorized tour operator in a convoy of at least two 4x4 vehicles. You must also be accompanied by a local guide and armed scouts at all times due to extreme environmental conditions and security rules.

How long does the journey take?
The initial drive takes 3 to 4 hours, and standard tours last 3 to 4 days in total.
Once you leave Mekelle or Semera, you spend the next few days traveling between sites like Dallol and Erta Ale in your 4WD convoy. Driving times between the specific geothermal and volcanic sites vary, but expect long hours on rough, unpaved terrain.
| Route Leg | Approximate Time | Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Mekelle to Danakil Depression | 3 - 4 hours | 4WD Convoy |
| Dodom Camp to Erta Ale Crater | 3 hours | Hiking (9.5 km) |
| Standard Tour Duration | 3 - 4 days | 4WD / Camping |
How much does the transport cost?
Transport is bundled into the overall tour price, which ranges from $380 to $650 per person.
This price covers your seat in the 4WD vehicle, fuel, the driver, the mandatory armed scouts, permits, guides, and basic camping gear. Prices vary based on group size and specific inclusions, and they are subject to change. Tour Cost Guide

What is the transport like?
You will travel in sturdy 4x4 vehicles, typically Land Cruisers.
The roads quickly degrade from paved surfaces to rough tracks, volcanic rock, and salt pans. Vehicles must be equipped for harsh desert conditions, and traveling in a convoy ensures that if one vehicle breaks down, another is there to assist.

Is it safe to travel there?
Travel is generally safe if done between November and March with a reputable operator.
However, the environment is extremely harsh. The average daily maximum temperature often exceeds 41°C (106°F). This is why independent travel is banned and why military and armed scout escorts are required for every tourist convoy. Safety Guide
