Hydration is critical. Bring electrolyte powder or hydration tablets to replenish minerals lost to sweat. There are no showers, so pack wet wipes and alcohol-based sanitizer. Read our full Survival Packing List for more details.

Planning questions
Where do tours start?
Expeditions begin in the cities of Mekelle or Semera. You must travel there, usually by domestic flight, before joining your 4WD convoy.
How fit do I need to be?
You need moderate fitness. The trek to Erta Ale is 9.5 kilometers over uneven, solid lava rock and takes about 3 hours. It is done in the dark.
Where will I sleep?
You will sleep outdoors on cots. There are no hotels in the depression. Operators provide basic camping equipment, but a lightweight sleeping bag liner is recommended.
